*English as Second Language (ESL) – Westwood is an English language school. Transcripts/teacher recommendations should indicate demonstration of English level or ability. Submission of TOEFL or IELTS scores is recommended.
All students must have a functional ability in English. This means that the student can follow or give basic information in an emergency and can follow basic instructions or direction from a teacher. Westwood provides ESL support for students already speaking some English, but Westwood is not a language school. Students lacking a functional ability in English must complete an ESL program BEFORE arrival at Westwood.
Students with a minimal functional ability in English are conditionally admitted up to Grade 10. These students are placed in an ESL program of at least 5 additional hours per week. Fees for ESL are not included in base tuition and are borne by the student.
ESL students are not accepted for entry in the Diploma Programme (DP), Grade 11 and Grade 12. DP is challenging and rigorous and is not appropriate for ESL students. Alternative placement in Grade 10 and ESL is possible.
